The Veterinary Research Institute (VRI, General Directorate of Agricultural Research, ELGO-DIMITRA) was founded in 1997 in Thessaloniki. VRI conducts research in the following scientific areas: • animal health and welfare • reproduction and genetic improvement of farm animals • hygiene and technology of food of animal origin.
In detail, VRI focuses on:
- the epidemiological investigation of animal diseases that negatively affect livestock productivity, addressing antimicrobial and anthelmintic resistance through innovative and alternative approaches, the research on emerging and re-emerging diseases and on improving health and well-being of farm animals.
- the study, handling and preservation of gametes and embryos of farm animals, the development of adapted protocols for the reproductive management of livestock farms/enterprises, the study of the reproductive patterns of domestic breeds of farm animals, the study of subfertility and of mastitis of farm animals, the development of schemes of selection, genetics management and genetic improvement of farm animals, the characterization, preservation and management of animal genetic resources
- the hygiene and quality of animal origin foods and their impact on public health, the development of innovative functional foods with high added value and special indications as well as the investigation of foodborne epidemics

The Hellenic Agricultural Organization – DIMITRA (ELGO-DIMITRA) which is the universal successor of the National Agricultural Research Foundation (NAGREF), was established with the number 188763/10-10-2011 Joint Ministerial Decision (Government Gazette 2284/B/13-10-2011) and operates under Law 3659/A/28-3-2023 (Government Gazette).
The purpose of ELGO-DIMITRA is to conduct research, promote innovation and technology, disseminate knowledge, provide consulting services as well as professional education and training in all sectors of the agri-food chain, ensuring the quality of agricultural products & food, the implementation of good practices in agriculture and the control of the milk and meat production-distribution chain in the country.
